The childhood vaccine debate
What are childhood vaccines? Should I vaccinate my child? These are some of the questions new parents ask themselves.
It would be appropriate to start by clarifying what a vaccine is. This is nothing more than a medicine that is injected into people so that our body generates defenses against future infections.
When we are parents for the first time, a sea of doubts is presented to us and, among them, what to do with the subject of vaccination. The normal thing would be for the professionals who look after the health of our children to explain to us, by system, what are the benefits and risks of vaccines, but this does not usually happen on a day-to-day basis.
YOU MUST HAVE COMPLETE INFORMATION WHEN DECIDING WHETHER TO VACCINATE OR NOT
The pediatrician at the Health Center would have to answer all those questions that are generating fears in parents, especially first-timers, and then they make a decision without haste, evaluating pros and cons, thinking about what is best for the minors, if they go from very young to nursery schools or parenting is done entirely at home, if there are older siblings in school who may be carriers of contagious diseases …
When adults are safe and convinced we will reach a satisfactory conclusion.

THE VACCINATION SCHEDULE
Another issue that we have to consider is that there is a basic calendar, set by the Vaccine Advisory Committee of the Spanish Association of Pediatrics. This is covered by Social Security and each Autonomous Community makes the variations it deems appropriate. But in addition, there are others that we will have to pay if we want them to apply to our children.
There are some minimums and each Autonomous Community has the competence to modify what it deems pertinent. Hence, the vaccination schedule for a child from Cantabria does not have to be the same as that for a child from Madrid, to name a few example.
Some of the vaccines available are listed below:
.-HB (Antihepatitis B)
.-DTPa / Tdpa (Diphtheria, Tetanus and Pertussis)
.-VPI (Antipoliomielítica inactivada)
.-Hib (Haemophilus Influenzae tipo b)
.-MenC (Meningococo C)
.-VNC (Neumococ)
.-SRP (Measles, Rubella and Mumps)
.-HPV (Human Papillomavirus)
.-RV (Rotavirua)
.-Var (Varicela)
.-Flu (Flu)
.-HA (Antihepatitis)
To summarize, encourage all parents to learn and get advice about everything we do not know and more in relation to health issues. Do not make decisions lightly or looking at what the majority do, friends, family, closest environment …
Be consistent and have your own personality to follow one path or another, always ensuring the well-being and quality of life of our children.
