Intercultural education in schools

Values ​​are constantly changing in a society. For this reason, the morality that we have today is very different from what we had, for example, in the generation of our parents or our grandparents.

With the media and new technologies we live in an interconnected world, that is, the distance between countries and the borders with them are sometimes blurred , as we can find out what is happening in all of them in real time and, also, to be able to put us in contact with their residents, in any part of the planet in which they are.

THE CURRENT REALITY IS GLOBALIZATION

The fact that we can travel abroad more often has also contributed to our curiosity to know other cultures , either by importing, in addition, their eating habits, with new foods and dishes that in the end we also end up adopting as part of our diet. , as well as other traditions , such as musical ones, that we can hear anywhere we are in our own country, among many other traditions or customs of others.

This constant change of cultural information affects all the inhabitants of the planet, causing some of the values ​​that the generations before ours had to be modified. Thus, the education of the youngest must go according to this new moral , in order to accept a world in constant change, and to be able to live in peace and happiness with all its members.

The task of parents is to educate their children and give them the tools they need in order to carry out this task in the best possible way. Parents are the greatest influence in terms of values ​​and attitudes for children, so their example will be key for their later development in adulthood, performing acts and saying what they have probably heard at home throughout their growth.

The school also plays a fundamental role in completing the education of the little ones. For this reason, classrooms and subjects are constantly changing, so that pedagogues and education specialists can adapt their content to the reality that surrounds students. In this way they get them to learn everything they need today, so that it will be of benefit to them in the not-so-distant future.

Thus, intercultural education is a reality in many of the schools around the world, because we live in an interconnected world , where countries that previously could seem very distant with people different from ours are no longer so and new generations they want to understand and learn to empathize with these citizens, with whom they can share so many things and make the world a fairer and better place for everyone, respecting our differences and appreciating what we have in common.

INTERCULTURAL EDUCATION IN THE CLASSROOM

What is sought to be done with intercultural education at school is that children, from the first years of their education, are able to understand that there are cultures other than the local one in the world and that we must respect them all , despite agreeing or not with some of their behaviors.

Thus, the first thing that is done is to inform the children of the existing reality . To do this, they will study geography, to know how to locate these countries on the map, and later they will go on to study cultural and social details of some or all of them. Little by little, as the student matures and acquires information, he will be able to understand that there are very diverse people in the world, but that the important thing is to learn to live together.

Children will have an overview of the world and will be able to understand the different ways of thinking in each of these societies. The fact of enhancing empathy will make them reject such negative values ​​as racism, social exclusion or discrimination for being different. Therefore, the fact of including intercultural education in schools is a very positive act, since it helps the little ones to acquire essential values ​​to be able to coexist properly in society and make the world a better place.

In addition, seeing behaviors that do not seem fair to them, it is possible that students from schools with intercultural education have the desire to make the right decision and help these people who need it , making sure that some of the current unfair situations can be remedied and are not repeated by future generations, as did our ancestors. Some young people today are already dedicating themselves to fighting for equality and well-being today and for years to come, such as in favor of climate change or against armed conflicts.
