Can baby eat egg in food introduction?

From the introduction of food, around six months, the baby can already eat eggs . Did you know?

In the past there was a lot of discussion about whether or not to offer eggs to children. But with the advancement of studies in relation to allergies, the recommendation of the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) today is that the egg should be offered as early as 6 months. And the sooner the better. Understand why by reading our article to the end.

Babies’ Immunological Window

About 5% of children in Brazil today have some type of food allergy. In order to prevent and reduce this index, pediatricians and nutritionists always recommend ingesting the egg (white and yolk) from 6 months of age .

This is because there is a period between 6 and 9 months of the baby that is called the “immune window”. During this period the risk of food allergy is reduced . When we offer eggs to the baby only after 9 months of life, the risk of developing this allergy increases significantly.

Another way to reduce the risk of this and other allergies is to breastfeed exclusively until 6 months and, if possible, until 2 years of age.

Meet this and other benefits of exclusive breastfeeding up to six mese s .

Eggs are present in a huge amount of recipes that we eat daily. Hence the concern to reduce the risk of allergy in children, aiming at their quality of life in the future .

Chicken’s egg

Eggs have properties that help the brain develop, are good for the eyes and are a source of vitamin D and B12 , which are important for the skin and bones.

In meals, eggs can serve as a source of protein , which is so important in this stage of accelerated growth of the little ones.

In addition, eggs have good amounts of iron, phosphorus, calcium and zinc , among other vitamins and minerals. In other words, the egg is a supernutritious food!

Quail egg

The quail egg can also be offered, but in moderation . A small quail egg provides the same amount of cholesterol as a chicken egg, so it should be eaten with care.

But it is worth remembering that it also has more protein , among other nutrients. The quail egg is considered a concentrated egg , because even having a smaller size it has the same nutrients as a chicken egg.

Furthermore, the ratio of yolk to egg size is greater than that of a hen’s egg. And as it is the yolk that has most of the nutrients , this little egg becomes so powerful.

However, it is important to be careful in how to offer. Because it’s small, it’s easy to choke. Don’t offer whole, cut in half always.

Free range and organic eggs

Free range or organic eggs should always be preferred when buying. Due to the food and environment in which the hen is raised, these eggs offer even more benefits.

Despite being generally smaller in size, organic eggs have a third less cholesterol, seven times more beta-carotene, twice as much Omega 3 and 25% less saturated fat, compared to an ordinary egg .

Therefore, prefer to buy eggs at fairs!

How to offer?

First of all, be careful with the famous salmonella . This very common bacterium dies at a temperature of 70°C . That’s why it’s important to cook the egg well for consumption, especially when we’re going to give it to a baby.

Some options to vary the way you prepare eggs:

  • Omelet: take the opportunity to mix a little chopped cabbage and green seasoning , for example. It’s a way to offer the baby some foods that he still cannot chew;
  • Scrambled eggs are also a hit with babies! They can be prepared with some chopped whiting to increase the supply of vitamins . Butter, widely used in the preparation of scrambled eggs, can only be included in the baby’s diet after 1 year of age;
  • Boiled egg: classic and easy. Leave the egg for 12 minutes in boiling water to ensure complete cooking;
  • Fried egg (without oil) : it is not recommended to offer fried foods before the age of 2, but you can prepare a delicious fried egg without oil, as in this recipe here .

Be sure to offer your little one eggs. Egg is an excellent food, very safe if offered in the right way and at the right time .
