The basal temperature method to know if I am pregnant
If we have measured the basal temperature to know the days of fertility, we can also know when there is a pregnancy.
Recently we talked in PregDream Padres about the method of measuring basal temperature to know the days of maximum fertility and that, therefore, they told us when we should have sexual intercourse in order to conceive. However, a woman’s body temperature can give us a lot of information, for example when, indeed, conception has been successfully achieved and she is pregnant.

MEASURE BASAL TEMPERATURE
Basal temperature is the lowest temperature that our body reaches in a state of rest. It is what we have when we wake up after having been sleeping, but after a sleep of at least 5 hours. We must measure it as soon as we wake up, without waiting, or getting out of bed . Therefore, it is essential to have the thermometer on the bedside table, so that we automatically wake up and put the thermometer on.
If we use this method in order to know if we are pregnant, it is generally because we have previously used it to know the days of ovulation . Therefore, we will already have the temperature record of the previous months and we simply have to continue measuring and pointing daily. If we have not done so, we will not be able to know with just one measurement if we are pregnant, because we do not know how our body works at a normal temperature level.
We remember that measuring the basal temperature requires a lot of perseverance , and it must be done over several months to obtain the general pattern of temperature throughout the menstrual cycle. We mean that in a month it is very likely that there will be some day where the measurement is not entirely reliable, either because we have not rested enough, we are ill, we are late in taking the temperature, etc.
NORMAL TEMPERATURE CHANGES
The temperature begins to register on the first day of menstruation. The scheme by which the basal temperature changes throughout the menstrual cycle , or the month, is as follows:
– The temperature is lower on the days of menstruation until the middle of the menstrual cycle.
– The temperature rises between 0.2 and 0.5 degrees the day after ovulation.
– The temperature stays higher in the following days (minimum 10) until the next menstruation arrives. Then it will go down again.
WHEN DO I KNOW THAT I AM PREGNANT?
When the highest temperature, which occurs after ovulation, is maintained for more than 18 days, it is most likely that pregnancy has occurred. Generally, this temperature will stay above 37 degrees . It will be time, then, to use another method of pregnancy test, such as the home test , to check if, indeed, we are right.
If the test still gives us negative, we can go to our GP or gynecologist to tell him what happened, and have him do a pregnancy test. However, if it tests positive, a visit to the doctor is essential to begin this whole process of waiting for the baby.
CAN I PREDICT LABOR WITH BASAL TEMPERATURE?
Yes, but this is a rough estimate. Also, women who have a menstrual cycle other than 28 days. We would do the following:
We subtract 7 days from the first day of maximum temperature, then we subtract 3 months, and later we add 1 years. For example, if the day of maximum temperature is June 29, we would do the following :
June 29 ? 7 days = June 22
June 22nd ? 3 months = March 22
March 22 + 1 year = March 22, 2016
In PregDream Parents you have our calculator of the day of delivery , for which you do not need to know the basal temperature, you only have to know the first day of your last menstruation.
