Education for Teen Mothers
Adolescent mothers need education in order to have a better future, the lack of education only brings problems in the short and long term.
In Spain the birth rate has decreased and is at very low levels, there has not been such a low birth rate since there are records (since 1941). Low resources, lack of employment, fear of not being able to combine work life with family life, social emotional instability in general … all this causes families to delay motherhood and fatherhood.
But despite these discouraging data for a society where there are more deaths than births in the year, there are still women who become mothers even as adolescents. For these teenage mothers, education is an important factor, both in terms of their immediate academic challenges and their long-term earning potential …
Today we want to talk about this, about the importance of education for teenage mothers, because many of them sacrifice their lives and their personal achievements to raise their children. They do not see real help in their lives and they dedicate themselves to working as they can to be able to raise their little ones.

TEENAGE MOTHERS
The mothers adolescents are at high risk of not completing high school. Only half of teen mothers have a high school diploma , and less than 2% earn a college degree by the time they turn 30. Not surprisingly, 30% of these teen mothers say the pressures of parenthood and pregnancy played a large role in their decision to drop out of school.
Even when teenage mothers do finish school, they usually do so two years behind their non-parenting peers. At the same time, adolescent girls who drop out of school are more likely to become adolescent mothers than adolescent girls who stay in school and want a stable future job.
Generally, adolescent mothers have been because they did not have adequate information regarding sexual relations. Sex education is essential to avoid unwanted pregnancies among adolescents . In this sense, very few adolescent mothers are teenagers by choice. They usually have unprotected or unknowing sex and get pregnant unplanned.
THE LACK OF EDUCATION
Lack of education can make it difficult for adolescent mothers to find work, which may partly explain why becoming a mother in adolescence doubles the likelihood of a young woman living in poverty.
But the problem runs deeper: Children born to teenage mothers are more likely to drop out of school themselves and tend to fare worse in school, including 50% more likely to fall behind a grade . Also, daughters of teenage mothers are more likely to become teenage mothers
SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM
Pregnant teens can help increase their chances of finishing school by making a plan during pregnancy that will help them establish a strong financial future. This may mean exploring alternative schools that include childcare facilities, finding childcare support to help with the baby during school hours, or seeking apprenticeship-type work programs that allow teens to learn employable skills.
OTHER THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
One of the most effective ways to prevent educational challenges for teen mothers is to prevent teen pregnancy by making science-based sex ed classes part of every school’s curriculum. Schools that have implemented these programs have seen significant drops in teen pregnancy … they should be implemented in every school in the world!
