‘Frozen: The Ice Kingdom’, the new values of children’s movies
‘Frozen: The Kingdom of Ice’ is one of the most successful Disney films of recent years, it also teaches new models of women.
‘ Frozen: The Ice Kingdom ‘ is a film directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee and produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2013. It has been the winner of 2 Oscars: Best Animated Film and Best Original Song (‘Let It Go’ ). It has had a lot of impact in 2013, ranking first at the box office in Spain for several consecutive weeks.
The film is based on Hans Andersen’s play ‘The Snow Queen’ but with a totally new plot. This story is about two princess sisters, Elsa, the eldest, has magical powers and is able to control ice. Anna, the little girl, is an adventurous and cheerful girl. Both love each other very much but due to a prophecy Elsa ends up isolating herself from the world to avoid hurting her loved ones with her magical powers, therefore, a wall is created between the two sisters who are forced to separate.

WHAT VALUES CAN WE FIND IN FROZEN?
Frozen is a must-see movie for children , not only because of the great work in the artistic section but because of all the values it transmits to the viewer. It is the reflection that little by little modern society is evolving, although there is still much work to be done.
NEW CONCEPT OF HEROIN
Do you remember the old Disney princesses? They were brave and had a good heart (perhaps too naive), but often dependent on the rest, in need of being saved and developing, or typical roles of the time. For example, Snow White flees the kingdom because of her stepmother, she meets the dwarfs and without eating or drinking it she feels the need to take care of them, as if she were the mother of all of them (she cleans, cooks, orders …), formerly this role was accepted but is now out of date . Another case, Cinderella, goes to the ball thanks to the help of her fairy godmother and there she falls in love at first sight with the prince, it implies that love, apart from superficial, is as easy as wrapping herself in a beautiful dress and exposing herself to the the rest.In addition, taking it to the extreme, it shows that in no other way could she have attracted the prince’s attention (at that time the prince would not notice her as a servant). Love is not so easy to find today.
In the case of ‘Frozen’ we have two princesses. Anna is more jovial, romantic, dreamy and naive, she goes along the same lines as her predecessors, but she is also adventurous and brave, a characteristic that she shares with other princesses such as Bella, Jasmine or Mulán . For her part, Elsa is independent, mature and has her feet on the ground, she has more important concerns than finding the love of her life, she has the need to protect her loved ones and for this she sacrifices and represses herself. However, in the middle of the film, she decides to “break free” and be herself, regardless of what others may think of her (the lyrics of the song “Let it go” show it perfectly) or to be guided by the rules of the film. society that surrounds it.
ROMANTIC LOVE ISN’T EVERYTHING
In old Disney princess movies there is always a romance that evolves into a happy ending. Here it certainly exists as well, but it is not the main knot of the film. Here is another kind of love that surpasses the previous one, the love between sisters.
The previous princesses fell in love at first sight, hardly knowing their companions. Ariel, Pocahontas, Aurora, Cinderella, Snow White and a long etc. Except for a few exceptions such as Bella or Mulán, few are spared. In this movie there is an important lesson: do not be so impulsive and use your head, wait to meet the other person . Anna wants to marry a prince she has just met, despite the advice of her sister Elsa. In the end the prince betrays her and turns out to be an impostor who only wanted her to obtain the kingdom. The movie shows that we cannot give our hearts to someone we just met. What’s more, [CONTAINS SPOILER]Princess Anna ends up in love with her adventure partner, with whom she spends her days, helps her and gives everything for her. There is a mutual sacrifice on both sides throughout the movie. Another important message: a fact is worth a thousand words.
FAMILY VALUES
Another novelty is that in the film they put family love above romantic love. [CONTAINS SPOILER] At the end of the film, Princess Anna has to decide between saving her sister or living happily with her love. He sacrifices his life protecting his sister Elsa and manages to break the curse to which she was subjected with an act of “true love”, the one that exists between the two sisters and not necessarily between lovers.
FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS
Throughout the film Anna seeks her sister’s love, it is the main motivation of the character and she remains faithful to her until the end, thus achieving her goal. Another value: be persistent with your dreams and you will end up achieving them.
A GOOD MOVIE FOR CHILDREN?
Certainly yes. It breaks the previous schemes and introduces new values in a more direct way. It is clear that other Disney films convey similar messages, but in a more subtle way. In this movie the message is clear from the beginning. Although there is still much work to be done, this film is a clear example that society is evolving little by little. Princesses are different, the main theme is not romantic love and it teaches children to be persistent with their dreams but at the same time be more realistic. If you want to have a good time with the little ones in the house or just see something different and original, this is your movie.
