How should the study space of our sons and daughters be

According to most experts and psychologists , they believe that an accumulation of ‘junk’ in the same space is a trend that should be eradicated, since it can lead to problems such as anxiety or stress. Therefore, to start creating a good study base in the children’s room, the first thing we must do is to promote a clean, tidy and comfortable space with what is strictly necessary.

A GOOD TABLE

It doesn’t have to be the largest on the market or the latest model, but it does have to be spacious and unobstructed . If we overload the desk, the only thing we would achieve is also overload the study space, thus reducing the chances of feeling comfortable and without stress. If that space gives the feeling of overwhelm, our mind does not work comfortably , so there is a lot of information that is lost at the time of the study.

The desk should only be used for homework or study time, because resting places should never be associated with workspaces . That is why it is not recommended that you study on the sofa or at the dining table, because that is where you relax with your family or eat. This occurs for several reasons: you tend to be distracted more often and can create stressful and overwhelming situations.

The desk, therefore, must face a view that allows everyone to be comfortable . The normal thing is in front of a window, which – although in danger of being distracted – also helps the mind to relax with a quick look outside to regain concentration. On the other hand, the position in the room is convenient for the light that enters, since if they study all the time with artificial light, the eyes would end up getting tired and with it the desire to focus on the work that is being developed.

AN OFFICE CHAIR

It must be comfortable and prevent back and neck injuries, such as drooping shoulders, displacement of the spine due to a continuous bad position or pain in the lower back. With this furniture they must sit upright and from which to spend several hours in a row in it, making the proper stops every 30 or 45 minutes to stretch their legs.

The one that is fixed or with wheels is the least, since it depends on the comfort of each one. Usually a fixed one is more affordable, thus due to its stability that it does not allow distraction so easily. Desk chairs usually have padded arms , so that the body rests and relaxes while our head is working.

But being seated does not mean that they are in a time of rest, but as a counterweight to the mental effort that is being made . That is why it is important that the shape of the chair is not straight at the back, but that it is curved and that it adjusts to the shape of the back, always allowing a correct position. For the lower zone, a good padding is also important, since the base of the back is the one that tends to suffer the most

A GOOD LAMP

A table lamp is not the same as a ceiling lamp in the room. In the case of the lamp that is used, the light is very important for a good development and an improvement of understanding. Attention and learning is on everyone’s mind, but all the information they are studying enters them -normally- by sight . That is why it is important to take care of it.

In class, children tend to crush their eyes a lot, since they spend almost six hours with books in front of their desks, not to mention the screens they use both outside and inside school: mobiles, televisions, screens such as blackboards, projectors … All this ends up negatively affecting their eyesight, so the eye examination in the student stage is very important.

In order not to aggravate the problem , the lamp must also be suitable. The size is not the most important thing, but the type of light it projects. The bulb must conform to the shape of the fixture and emit a clear light . The yellow ones tire the sight because the eye tends to force more to read; although they seem very comfortable compared to the whiter ones, which are known to promote an excess of luminosity.

Therefore, neither so much nor so little; with a low power, a spotlight that focuses on a specific point on the desk – which is what you will be working on – and with clear luminosity will do. If the light covered more space than necessary, children would tend to be more easily distracted .

AN ORGANIZED SITE

A good organization of the space allows a good learning system and an improvement in concentration. Shelves, drawers or organizers are very important in this case. First, one must independently learn to follow a routine and a practical organization . In this case, it is best for each one to choose the best organizational system, since each person is different and they do not have the same capacity for concentration .

Once that storage system is established – papers, books, notebooks … school supplies, in short – the only thing left to do is to comply with the order that has been created. For this, a discipline that is complied with on a daily and voluntary basis is needed, since the organization must be useful and not arbitrary , so that the space does not become an obligation, which in turn subtracts the comfort of the space from which it is spoke before.

The importance of having drawers and shelves is basic so that each thing can have a distinguished place. It must also be counted that each shelf must have easy access and where things can be found quickly . In this way, when something is required that is outside the desk but within the same room, concentration is not lost for a long time.

These pieces of furniture have to be distributed throughout the room in such a way that, not only when studying but also regularly, it is possible to distinguish between the rest area, the work area and the leisure area . With this it is understood that the bed should be used for sleeping, the desk for homework and an area, such as certain shelves, reserve them for your personal and recreational things : photos, extracurricular books, collections, prizes …
