ID and passport for the baby: documentation and processing
According to Spanish law, the DNI can be made from the moment a person is registered in the Civil Registry.
In Spain, the National Identity Document is mandatory from the age of 14, both for residents and resident foreigners . In the rest of the cases, the DNI is optional, and all the procedures within the national territory can be carried out through the Family Book . In this case, it is necessary for the baby to be registered in a regulatory manner.

SO A CHILD UNDER 14 CAN’T HAVE IT?
Yes you can. According to Spanish law, it can be done from the moment a person is registered in the Civil Registry . This procedure is mandatory and must be carried out between 24 hours and eight days after delivery .
WHY IS THE DNI NECESSARY IN CHILDREN?
As we already mentioned, we can carry out all the procedures with the Family Book. Yes, it is practical to have this document if we want to travel within the European Union and to board by plane .
YOU MUST ALWAYS BE REGISTERED IN THE CIVIL REGISTRY
WHAT PREREQUISITES ARE THERE TO ORDER IT?
Only the aforementioned of being registered in the Civil Registry . In case you have never had to carry out this procedure, we explain how it is carried out:
If we have to register the child in the place where it was born , it will be enough to go to the Civil Registry with the Family Book, the DNI of the father and the mother (both the originals and a photocopy must be taken), as well as the documentation that have been delivered to us at the maternity ward: the registration application, the data sheet for the National Institute of Statistics (INE) and the medical report. The documents in this last section must be correctly completed.
If we want to register in the municipality in which the parents are registered , but this does not coincide with the one of their birth, we must go to the Civil Registry both parents, on a mandatory basis. In addition to the above documents, we must bring the registration certificate of the two parents (in the event that your ID does not include the town hall where the registration is to be made), as well as a certificate, issued by the hospital, that the child has not been registered in the municipality in which it was born. We will have to request this last document at the management of the center, before the child is discharged.
Once registered in the Registry, our child will have every right, according to Spanish law, to have a National Identity Document .
HOW DO YOU APPLY?
The DNI is processed in certain National Police stations . There is usually one with expedition capacity in each city or town hall. There are open opening hours, but most of those who attend have an appointment. In order not to waste time, it is best to make an appointment by calling 902 247 364 or, telematically, at the address www.citapreviadnie.es. After they give us an hour, we will receive an SMS on the phone confirming the date and place where the procedure will take place. The process itself is very fast and takes just a few minutes.
In addition, as the child is under 14 years of age, he must be accompanied by a person who represents him, father, mother or legal guardian , who comes with their pertinent documentation.
WHAT DOCUMENTATION DO WE HAVE TO BRING?
We will have to present the following documents:
A color photograph of passport size (they will make it to us with that measurement in any photography store).
The family book and the DNI of both parents , if it is the first time we issued the document (that is, we will not need to bring them for a renewal of the card).
The baby’s registration form , a document that is issued municipally. This is, it is granted by the municipalities, and therefore it will depend on where you live. Most of the large municipalities issue it electronically, and all deliver it in person at municipal offices.
THE PASSPORT IS MANDATORY TO LEAVE THE EUROPEAN UNION
WE HAVE TO PAY?
Yes. The first expedition currently costs 10.40 euros .
HOW OFTEN DO YOU HAVE TO RENEW IT?
We will have to renew the card every five years , also paying a fee of 10.40 euros each time (if they do not decrease or more likely they will increase the amount the next time). At older ages, or in some special cases, the renewal interval increases. It should also be noted that the DNI will have to be renewed every time any of the data that appears in it changes: for example, when we change our address . In this case, we are not charged for making the changes.
WHAT DO BABIES NEED A PASSPORT FOR?
For them, as for adults, it is necessary to have a passport if traveling outside the European Union .
HOW LONG IS THE PASSPORT VALID FOR?
According to current law, for children under five years of age the validity of the passport is limited to two years . Subsequently, the terms go to five and ten years. You will be able to request a new passport when the previous document is within the last twelve months of validity.
WHERE IS THE PASSPORT ISSUED?
In Police Headquarters and Stations, following the same process as the DNI.
WHAT DOCUMENTATION MUST WE PROVIDE?
In the case of minors who have ID, we must bring this document and a recent photograph . If you do not have a DNI, things get a bit complicated, and we must bring:
A literal birth certificate issued by the Civil Registry. We already explained how to obtain it in the section on DNI.
THE DNI IS MANDATORY FROM THE AGE OF 14
A recent photograph of the child’s face, which must be passport size, in color and with a “clear, smooth and uniform” background, in addition to being taken from the front . In addition, the child cannot wear dark glasses or have any clothing that makes identification difficult. All of this may seem obvious, but just in case you have to take it into account.
In addition, in the case that concerns us, underage children or babies must be accompanied by someone who exercises parental authority or guardianship. We must prove both our identity and the kinship relationship , through the literal birth certificate already mentioned. If that document is not valid, we will carry the Family Book.
