Normal blood pressure in pregnancy
It is very important that you know what the blood pressure is in pregnancy so that you can have good control.
Pregnant women face the challenge of dealing with general body changes. Maintaining normal blood pressure turns out to be a difficult task but it is absolutely necessary to achieve it to maintain good health in the mother and in the baby that is developing in the mother’s womb.
Regular blood pressure tests are very important during pregnancy. Most women may not develop high blood pressure during pregnancy. However, high blood pressure ( hypertension ) can develop in some women and become a major problem. Most of the time the increase is slight but must be controlled. Although in some cases, high blood pressure can become severe and harmful to both the mother and her baby. Some women can even develop pre-eclampsia ; a more acute and dangerous condition.

WHAT IS NORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE DURING PREGNANCY
To measure the blood pressure level, the reading shows two figures similar to a fraction, such as 110/60. The top number indicates systolic blood pressure which has to do with how the heart pumps blood around the body. The bottom number is the diastolic blood pressure which is the measurement that shows how the heart relaxes between beats.
It is not advisable to compare the results with your family or friends as it can vary considerably from one person to another. Average standard blood pressure ranges from 110/70 to 120/80 for healthy people and can vary greatly during pregnancy.
NORMAL RANGE
The normal blood pressure reading should not exceed 120/80 for a pressure to be within limits. Some doctors differ with this and prefer readings lower than 115/75. The risk of prehypertension occurs when the blood pressure reading is between 121/80 and 139/89. High blood pressure is any reading above 140/90. If the readings are less than 90/50, then you are more likely to have low blood pressure, also known as hypotension. Systolic or diastolic readings are used to diagnose high or low blood pressure only if one of the two measurements is outside the normal range.
About 8% of women during pregnancy experience high blood pressure instead of low blood pressure, which is normal although it should be controlled in both cases.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BLOOD PRESSURE CONTROL DURING PREGNANCY
After knowing what the normal range of blood pressure is and also during pregnancy, you should start doing something to control your blood pressure if you are pregnant. Blood pressure levels indicate potential problems that can occur during pregnancy. When a pregnant woman goes for prenatal visits, the doctor will often check her blood pressure.
However, home blood pressure monitors play an important role in monitoring changes in blood pressure that can go unnoticed between doctor visits. The risk of pre-eclampsia or high blood pressure can develop during pregnancy and therefore it is often recommended to monitor blood pressure at home.
If you do not have a device to monitor your blood pressure at home, pharmacies can take your blood pressure. Ideally, you should go to your pharmacy to have your blood pressure measured 3 times a week at the same time and write it down on paper. Although the ideal is that you take your blood pressure every day at home, in a relaxed moment and that you write down the blood pressure reading on a paper also noting the time and day. This way you can have a good control and then discuss it with your doctor.
