Why do birthmarks or marks appear?
Newborns may have red spots on their skin, some disappear with time and others must be watched.
Many are the babies who are born with small marks on their skin, but it is not a symbol of alarm, since the percentage of those known as spots or birthmarks is very high. Its name is not derived from any type of disease, but simply from the fact that they appear from the moment of birth and in almost all cases it is not predictable from pregnancy.
Most are red spots and they are not very important since they disappear after a few weeks, others do have to be more closely monitored and go to the doctor periodically to have them analyzed.
Birthmarks on the skin are small changes in the color of the skin that appear from the moment they arrive in the world . They can measure from a few millimeters to a few centimeters and appear anywhere on the body. You should always go to the pediatrician or dermatologist, although in most cases these are common spots due to the accumulation of melanocytes, that is, the melanin cells that give color to the skin or some problem that has occurred in the blood vessels, which have been able to dilate.
As we have commented previously, although in most cases we should not worry and they disappear over time , birthmarks can be divided mainly into two types, depending on the origin or cause of the stain. In this way we speak of vascular spots and pigmented spots.
They are due to the fact that the blood in the blood vessels has been able to increase to the point where red spots can be seen through the skin.
The most common of the vascular spots is the pinkish or salmon colored spot that usually appears around the face and neck area. At first they can go unnoticed because they are light in color and stand out little on the skin in the first days of life . It is the most common of the birthmarks and usually disappears in the first years of life, but it is one of the few marks that can remain forever. They are not a sign of concern and are usually small, so they do not usually give rise to major aesthetic problems.
Another of the most common skin birthmarks due to blood problems are hemangiomas . These red spots are more obvious because, in addition to having a darker tone than the pink ones, they represent a small roughness in the skin that makes it more bulky. They are much less aesthetic but in most cases they show a process of involution that makes them whiter until they disappear. They should be more closely monitored than the previous ones in case they suffer any alteration that may be related to other factors.
The last most common type of vascular stain is known as a port wine stain , due to its much darker color . They are much more obvious red spots , although not from the first moment and usually grow as the baby grows . In this case it is flat in appearance, has no roughness and appears in most cases on the face. It can cause more problems both aesthetically because they do not usually disappear, as well as diagnosis, since it can be related to syndromes such as Sturge-Weber.

PIGMENTED MARKS
In this case, the spots on the skin are due to an increase in color in a certain area, that is, from the melanin of the skin and the cells that compose it . The best known of the pigmented-type birthmarks are moles, also known as nevi. From the smallest moles that almost all of us have scattered throughout our body, large spots can be reached that are what are known as giant nevi . When they are very large they can show some relief and include more hairs than normal. They should be monitored like other moles, especially when exposed to the sun, and controlled even more if they are in the area near the spine to rule out complications such as spina bifida.
The brown stain is what we know best as a craving or birthmark and are small marks of a slightly darker tan color on the skin and with unique shapes. When the baby is born they may appear large, but they do not increase in size so they appear smaller with growth. More than 20% of babies are born with a mark of this type, although they sometimes disappear. They are only worrisome when more than one appear.
The Mongolian spots are of a darker shade, which could be defined as bluish – gray. They appear on the back, especially in the lower area or even in the buttocks and to a greater degree in dark-skinned babies. They usually disappear before the first 5 years of life and are not a sign of concern.
TREATMENT
In most cases of birthmarks, no type of treatment is needed unless you want to remove it due to aesthetic problems or skin complications such as skin cancer in the case of moles. Extreme treatments are laser removal or surgery.
